Is your laptop not as efficient as it used to be? You may have the fastest internet connection at your disposal, but it will be of no use if you’re working on a sluggish laptop. Laptops slow down with regular use and as a result of too many files and programs saved on them.

What should you do?

Get rid of temporary files, organize your desktop and delete programs that you don’t have any use for. If there are bulky files that you need to retain, transfer them on to an external hard drive to free up the space for better machine performance.

  • Shutdowns

If your laptop starts to shut down repeatedly, it is most likely a case of overheating. Overheating is caused as a result of dust build-up in your laptop case and around its fan.

What should you do?

First, switch off your laptop completely and then clean it thoroughly. Start with removing the dust by blowing air into the side vent. If the shutdowns continue, get a cooling fan for your machine.

  • Battery issues

Typically, a fully charged laptop should function for about 4 hours, give or take an hour. But if you’re always charging your laptop, there’s probably too much strain on the battery.

What should you do?

If possible, shut down or reduce the number of open tasks and windows, switch off the Bluetooth option, turn the brightness down and switch on the energy saving mode. This will help stop the extra battery drain and keep the laptop on for longer. If your battery doesn’t pick up charge at all, you will have to replace the battery.

  • Wi-Fi connectivity

Connectivity problems with Wi-Fi networks can be extremely disruptive to your schedule. Usually, laptops in good condition don’t face this issue, but when it does happen, it could be simply because the Wi-Fi is switched off or because your laptop has a driver issue in the network adapter.

What should you do?

Switch on the Wi-Fi connection! If that’s not the problem, your laptop may be in airplane mode. All you have to do is change it from airplane mode to Wi-Fi mode. Still not connected? You might have to reinstall the drivers of the network adapter.

In most cases, these issues get magnified with time and usage. The slowdowns, shutdowns and battery issues pop up more often when you’ve had the same laptop for a few years.
